THE CAPTAIN OF NAKARA: THE KENYAN FILM YOU DIDN'T KNOW EXISTED

I can bet you this website that you have probably never heard of this Kenyan comedy movie. Don’t worry. I also only heard about it the other day. The film was released in 2012 and I am not surprised that most of us will only hear about it after reading this post.
The company that produced the film, Paper Moon Films, is not based in Kenya.
However, the director and pretty much the whole cast were Kenyans.

Bernard Safari stars as Muntu, a small-time thug who has just been released from prison in a presidential pardon together with his friend, Sunday, a role perfectly played by Charles Kiarie.
Nakara is a fictional African country, just after independence in the 1970s. Leadership revolves around the president, and the civil servants ride roughshod on the citizens.
Muntu falls in love with a beautiful preacher’s daughter, Muna. Muntu fails to mention his dark past and lies to Muna that he is a big shot businessman. He tries to find a job but all his efforts are futile due to adverse corruption in the country.
Angry, Muntu disguises himself as the arrogant drunkard, Captain Nakara. As the “military captain” Muntu is able to drives sense into the corrupt government officials, winning people’s adoration and marries the love of his life.

However the film kind of failed since it never got that much recognition form the local market. Part of the crew claimed it was due to tight budget but I think they just lacked marketing strategy.
